Koh Samui runs on a different weather clock to Phuket, and it catches a lot of travellers out. While the Andaman coast is being rained on by the southwest monsoon in June and July, the Gulf of Thailand is often calm and bright. When Phuket is at its glorious best in November, Samui is having its wettest month of the year.
For a yacht charter, that inverted calendar is good news: it means Thailand has excellent sailing somewhere almost year-round, and Samui's strongest months are not the ones most people assume.
The most reliable stretch of the year. Skies clear after the monsoon, humidity drops, and the sea settles into long calm spells. February is typically the driest and clearest month, with January and March close behind. Visibility for snorkelling is at its best, which makes this the prime window for Ang Thong and Koh Tao. It is also the busiest period — if you want a specific yacht over Christmas, New Year or Songkran, book months ahead.
Our favourite time to be on the water, and the island's best-value season. Expect hot, bright days with the occasional short afternoon shower that clears as quickly as it arrives. Seas stay generally calm, the water sits at a bath-like 28–30°C, and there are noticeably fewer boats at the popular anchorages. July and August bring European school holidays and a livelier island, but the Gulf itself stays comfortable throughout.
The northeast monsoon arrives and this becomes the wettest, choppiest part of the year, with November the heaviest month for rain. Ang Thong National Marine Park closes for part of this window (see below) and sea conditions can be unpredictable.
We will tell you honestly if your dates fall in a difficult period rather than take a booking we don't think you'll enjoy. Sheltered charters closer to Samui often still work well, and it is comfortably the cheapest time to charter a yacht in the Gulf.
Ang Thong closes annually during the monsoon, generally from around 20 October to 20 December. The exact dates are set by the park authority each year in response to conditions, and can shift — some years the closure runs closer to 1 November to mid-December.
If your trip falls anywhere near that window, ask us before you book. We track the announcements and will tell you where things stand. If the park is shut, the Gulf still has plenty to offer: Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and the islands south of Samui all stay open.

The Gulf's headline act, and the reason many people charter here at all. Forty-two limestone islands rise almost vertically out of jade-green water roughly 30 km northwest of Samui, protected as a national park since 1980. The famous Emerald Lagoon sits hidden inside a collapsed limestone crater on Koh Mae Ko, and the climb to the Pha Jun Jaras viewpoint delivers the view that ends up on everyone's camera roll. Sheltered bays make it superb for kayaking and easy snorkelling. Entry costs 300 THB per adult and 150 THB per child, and the park closes for part of the monsoon each year — see the seasons section above. On a private yacht you arrive on your own schedule, which usually means the quiet hours the day-tour fleet misses.
One of the most famous diving and snorkelling destinations in Southeast Asia, and the clearest water in the Gulf. Coral gardens sit close to the surface in sheltered bays, so you don't need to dive to see the best of it — a mask and a set of fins is plenty. Turtles, parrotfish and reef fish are common sightings. Visibility is at its sharpest in the dry months.
Three tiny islands joined by a shimmering sandbar that shifts with the tide — the most photographed view in the Gulf of Thailand, and genuinely as striking in person as in pictures. There is a short climb to the viewpoint, and the snorkelling starts a few metres off the beach.
Far more than its full-moon reputation suggests. Beyond the party beaches lies a green, mountainous island edged with quiet bays, jungle waterfalls and calm anchorages. The north and east coasts in particular are peaceful, scenic and barely touched by the crowds that fill Samui's beaches.
The easiest and most family-friendly day on the water, and a favourite with anyone travelling with young children. This little cluster off Samui's south coast offers powder-white sand, shallow turquoise water and some of the best-preserved coral close to the island. Koh Madsum is better known as Pig Island for the pigs that wander down onto the beach — a guaranteed hit with kids. Calm, shallow and close by, it makes for a relaxed half or full day rather than a long haul.

The rest of the year, a few weeks is usually comfortable. Last-minute charters are often possible; it simply narrows the choice of boat.
Day charters work for anything from a couple to a large party, and across the fleet we can accommodate groups of up to 70 guests for events. Overnight numbers are lower, since they're limited by cabins rather than deck space. Tell us your group size first — it's the fastest way for us to point you at the right boat.
